  • 8 Features of Nomex Insulation Paper

NOMEX paper is a synthetic aromatic amide polymer insulating paper with high mechanical properties, flexibility and good electrical properties, which can maintain its features even at a high temperature, and widely used in power generation machines, transformers, electrical equipment, electromechanical and household appliances.

There are 8 advantages of Nomex paper as below:

    1. Inherent dielectric strength

The calendered Nomex insulating paper products can withstand the short-term voltage field strength of 18~40KV/mm, without further treatment with varnish and resin. Due to the low dielectric constant of NOMEX products, it makes the electric field between insulation and cooling more uniform.

    2. Mechanical toughness

After calendering, the NOMEX insulating paper is quite strong, and has good elasticity, tear resistance and abrasion resistance. And the thin products are always flexible.

    3. Thermal stability

NOMEX insulating paper has the approval of UL material temperature class 220°C, which means it can maintain effective performance for more than 10 years even if it is continuously placed at 220°C.

    4. Chemical compatibility

NOMEX insulating paper is basically unaffected by most solvents, and features excellent resistance to acid and alkali corrosion. It is easily compatible with all varnishes, adhesives, transformer fluids, lubricants and coolants. In addition, NOMEX insulating paper will not be damaged by insects, fungi and molds.

    5. Low temperature performance

Under the boiling point of nitrogen (77K), the tensile strength of NOMEX insulating paper T410, NOMEX993 and 994 all exceed the strength value at room temperature.

    6. Not sensitive to moisture

When NOMEX insulating paper has a relative humidity of 95%, its dielectric strength is 90% of that in a completely dry state, and at the same time, many mechanical properties are actually improved.

    7. Radiation resistance

Even if the intensity of ionizing radiation reaches 800 megarads (8 megagrays), NOMEX insulating paper is basically unaffected, and after 8 doses of radiation, it still maintains its mechanical and electrical properties.

    8. Non-toxic and flammable

NOMEX insulating paper does not produce any known toxic reactions to humans or animals. NOMEX insulating paper does not melt in the air and does not support combustion. Moreover, its limiting oxygen index (LOI) at 220°C is greater than 20.8 (generally the combustion critical of empty air) value), so it will not burn. Nomex insulating paper meets the flame resistance requirements specified by UL94V-0.

Actually, Nomex paper family includes some different types, such as the most famous paper Nomex 410, then Nomex 411, Nomex 414, Nomex 416, Nomex 464. We will discuss More features of the different types in next article.
