  • 3M Scotch 2220 Electrical Stress Control Tape for Cable Jointing and Splicing

    Short Description:

3M Scotch Electrical Stress Control Tape 2220 is a self-fusing, silicone rubber tape engineered for critical electrical stress control and insulation in medium-voltage power cable accessories. Its primary application is within terminations and joints for cables rated up to 35kV, where it effectively manages the concentration of electrical stress at shield termination points. The tape’s formulated material properties—including a dielectric constant of 30 and a dielectric strength of 350 V/mil—are designed to smoothly grade the electric field, eliminating the need for a traditionally wound stress cone and simplifying installation.

The tape’s 275% elongation at break and 17 lbs/in tensile strength allow it to conform tightly to irregular shapes and cable components under stretch, ensuring reliable, void-free adhesion only to itself. This self-amalgamating property creates a permanent, monolithic rubber mass that provides excellent resistance to moisture, ozone, UV light, and corrosion. With a standard thickness of 0.76mm (30 mils), it builds a robust insulating layer. As a part of 3M’s reputable line of electrical products, Scotch 2220 tape offers utility and industrial engineers a trusted solution for enhancing the reliability and service life of cable terminations and splices in demanding environments.

    Application:

    1. Medium-Voltage Cable Termination: Used as the primary stress control layer within terminations for cables rated up to 35kV, replacing traditional stress cones.

    2. Cable Jointing / Splicing: Applied in intermediate joints and splices to manage electrical stress concentration and ensure long-term insulation integrity.

    3. Electric Field Grading:Its core function is to uniformly distribute and grade the high electric field at cable accessory interfaces, preventing partial discharge.

    4. Moisture-Sealed, Void-Free Insulation:The self-fusing silicone rubber forms a seamless, homogeneous insulation barrier that is resistant to environmental factors.
